There is a common myth about LNG tankers that it can only transport liquid gas in its tanks. However, this is false. LNG can travel over the ocean safely and without leaks. This myth was borne out of the experience of the first ocean-going LNG tanker, the Methane Pioneer. The ship, originally built as a cargo ship Marline Hitch in 1945, was later renamed the Don Aurelio or Nomarti in 1957. In 1958, the ship was modified for LNG transportation and renamed to Aristotle.

The theory is that a tanker leaking LNG can cause an “earthquake” because the gas vapors rapidly alter their state. But, it is not known how LNG can be absorbed into water. Experts believe that the dangers are relatively small compared to those of a pool fire or vapor cloud. But in practice, LNG spills are likely to be very dangerous and require additional precautions.

If an LNG leakage occurs on water, it could result in the “flameless blast” of the liquid. This means that it would quickly transition from liquid to gas. While a fireless explosion can not occur on water, this is possible due to LNG’s rapid phase change. Although the dangers are real, experts believe they are less risky than a pool fire or vapor cloud. It is vital to ensure that the vessel has been checked by a shipyard prior to launching.

Liquefied natural gas tankers have a low capacity. It will not be capable of carrying all the LNG it needs. If it spills, the tank will explode, and the water will turn into gas and cause a huge pollution problem. LNG, despite the high risk of spillage, is tightly controlled in order to minimize accidents.
