Turkey Tournament winners 2011.

It was all very festive at Wicklow Tennis Club on Friday last 16th  December.  After four long weeks the finals of the annual Cullens Butcher Turkey Tournament had arrived.  This year we had a record number of members participating in the competition with 17 teams made up of 136 players.   Huge thanks goes to the 17 captains who had the onerous task of organising their team of eight players for each match.  Despite some rained off matches the tournament finished on time and thankfully this year there was no snow to remove from the courts!  There were four matches played on Friday night,  first off were the Runner Up Play Off when team Snowflakes defeated team Stars, this was followed by the final where team Angels defeated team Santa’s.  It was very competitive with both teams playing for either a Turkey or a Ham.  Sponsors Robert and Collette Cullen from Cullens Butchers came along on the night and presented the prizes to all the finalists.  Cullen Butchers have been sponsoring this tournament for many years and the club is most appreciative of their continued support. Everyone enjoyed mulled wine and mince pies in the comfort of the recently upgraded hall in the clubhouse and many retired to the Old Forge to continue the celebrations.  Special thanks to tournament organiser Glenn Malone and his team for running the event so well.

A Victorian Christmas.

Wicklow Town is celebrating after winning RTE's The Business show's Christmas Towns Competition for its wonderful Victorian Christmas theme. Wicklow Town was selected because of the great efforts of Wicklow Gaol and local retailers who embraced the Victorian era by donning costumes and creating great window displays.

Bringing the theme to Cullens Quality Butchers, it got us thinking of the great feast and festive food which is enjoyed at Christmas time.

Did you know that the dinner we now associate with

Christmas began to take shape in Victorian times.

Victorians transformed the idea that Christmas should feature

around Family Celebrations and the Cooking of a Feast!

A Victorian Christmas Dinner was a feast in all its splendor! Tables were set with the best linens & china. There were a lot of dishes associated with it but A Roast formed the centerpiece of the feast! Taking pride of place on the Christmas table!  A Goose or Turkey (For the Gentry), Rib of Beef on the bone (for the Northern Folk) or a Boar’s Head or Ham was served up with roasted veg, mash, gravy & sage and onion stuffing. Even in a humbler household, Christmas was a very special occasion, people celebrating with the best meal they could afford.  A Game Pie or Rabbit was usually served.  Then, as now, Christmas Dinner was the high point of the day, a carefully planned meal and a real treat! The spirit of the Victorian Christmas is very much part of the Christmas we celebrate today!  A Celebration of Family & Food!!

FILM CREW COMES TO THE SHOP!

Celebrity Chef, Catherine Fulvio dropped into Cullens Butchers yesterday (5/7/11) to film a section for her new TV series Catherine's Family Kitchen, that is due to air on RTE on Friday nights in September.

Catherine was filmed coming into the shop and asking Robert Cullen about Wicklow Lamb and what makes it so good!

‘Wicklow Lamb is a product of its environment’ replied Robert ‘the animals are free to roam the hilly countryside and have access to Heather, Clover and of course the Good Green Grass!’ ‘this results in meat that is very tender and full of flavour’ he told Chef Catherine Fulvio.  Catherine then bought French Trimmed Lamb Cutlets to cook on the show!

Cullens Quality Butchers' 2010 'Turkey Tournament' finals take place in Wicklow Tennis Club.

The finals of Wicklow Tennis Club’s Cullen Butcher Turkey Tournament finally took place after a series of interruptions caused by the weather.

The tournament initially started in November but the adverse weather kept impacting on the play schedule.

The competition looked likely to continue into 2011 were it not for the determination of tournament organiser Glenn Malone to see it through.  On two occasions the courts had to be cleared of snow and this was only managed thanks to the sheer hard work of members who willingly gave many hours of their time to ensure the games could go ahead.

Despite the very cold temperatures of -2.5 degrees on finals day the high spirits of the 32 participants in the semi finals and finals shone through.  The two teams that made it to the final were ‘The Bell’s’ and the ‘Mince Pies’, each team made up of eight players.  Games were very close with the winners being the ‘Mince Pies’.

Special thanks to Robert Cullen of Cullen Butchers for sponsoring this very popular event.  The winners all won Turkeys and the runners up won Hams, so everyone was a winner on the nights.  The matches were followed by mince pies and mulled wine.  Thanks also are passed onto each of the 16 team captains who had a difficult  job to do with so many postponements of games

New home delivery service now available!

Cullens Quality Butchers of Wicklow Town are pleased to announce the  launch of their new home delivery  service.  This service promises next day delivery free to homes and businesses in Wicklow Town and  surrounding areas.

The reason why this service is being launched, according to owner, Robert  Cullen, is that ‘so many  people are fed up with supermarket meat and can’t always get to the butchers’ so ‘let the butcher  come to you’ he later  added.

This home delivery service follows on from Robert’s Grandfather, William Cullen, who started his  Butchery  Business in the late 1920’s with a horse and cart calling door to door  in  the Wicklow area.  ‘This is a nice return  to  the old ways’ says Robert, ‘my grandfather started out selling meat  door to  door, and now we are bringing  that   personal service back’ Robert’s Father Liam is a well know  butcher  in Wicklow who had many shops in the   1970’s and 80’s. Robert took over the running of the  business in 2008  and last year completed a major   renovation of the popular Wicklow Town store.

Cullens have been in the butchery business for 3 generations and have won  several awards over many  years for  their quality of meat and service, including  runner up in Wicklow Chamber of Commerce  awards of 2009 for  Retail Excellence. Cullens also supply many of the top local Restaurants, Coffee  Shops and Hotels in the area.

The delivery service offers free next day delivery on orders over €30 to Wicklow  Town. Rathnew,  Ashford,  Glenealy,  Barndarrig and Brittas Bay areas.
